As part of his residency with the Seattle Symphony, Bermel served as the workshop director for the annual Merriman Family Young Composers Workshop, where he guided 10 pre-college-age students through a 12-week workshop to create new chamber pieces that were performed by Seattle Symphony musicians at a culminating performance. Bermel also led the Seattle Symphony’s Simple Gifts initiative, creating a community-based composition with veterans who have experienced homelessness.
